Cycling Communities Awards 2008 |
|||||
Ealing Cycling Campaign nominated for Cycling Award 2007 saw Ealing Cycling Campaign apply and win a grant from the Transport for London Cycling Community fund. We used this to run our "Cycle into Summer 2007" project for the purchase of tools and spare parts to run maintenance sessions at a number of school fairs and community events. We fixed over 100 bicycles and received a fair amount of local press coverage and more importantly spread the word on cycling within Ealing. The project proved a great success, so much so we have been invited back to several events already without prompting and two new sub-projects have been initiated - more notably the Copley Estates youth club. The fund is quite large given the high profile cycling has within TfL recently. To this end TfL host an awards ceremony for selected projects that have shown to make a real difference, and not just projects like ours but also cycling within the emergency services and cycling at work. Our project was one of only three projects nominated for an award for working with young people were duly invited to attend a black tie event in May. The full story and official photographs can be found here on the TfL website http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/microsites/cyclingawards/2008/ along with a download for the brouchure of the event that we appear in. A massive thanks goes to all those that helped, either directly with fixing bikes but also handing out leaflets, erecting tables and flags poles, dealing with children and parents and host of other issues. Below are own photographs of us with our runner-up certificate being presented by David Brown, Managing Director of Surface Transport for London. We also met a local winner from last year who were nominated for a legacy award - Ealing Signing and Deaf Club and also Sarah Slater from LCC central, without whom we would not have obtained the grant in the first place.
