Many of you missed
a real treat on Wednesday 5th, when Peter Mynors gave a fascinating account
of a cycle tour in 1962; Guildford, Surrey to Epidavros, Greece; five
guys, two bikes (one 1908 triplet and one 1930's tandem), two trailers;
2503 miles in 58 days. It was interesting to see Europe then (no motors
in Kosovo, just bullock carts) and hear about the same areas thirty or
more years later. Often the cycling is still wonderful, when the old road
is still there and the traffic is away on a parallel motorway. (Austria,
though I've seen the same in Norway.) Made me want to set off again...
even hunt a puncture by dunking the innertube in a melon...

Cycle
facilities of various kinds are being presented at each area committee
in the borough shortly (one-way exemptions by entry plug and the like).
This is where you get to meet local councillors - grass roots democracy
- and find out what is going on. It is also your chance to stand up and
support plans that make cycling easier - such as contra-flow cycle lanes
on one way streets.
