New Bike Hire scheme arrives in Shepherd's Bush

The first hire bike in a an innovative new scheme has appeared in the neighbouring borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Anyone passing down the Uxbridge Road to Shepherds Bush can see a bike stand with a metal box attached. A hire bike is attached to the box, or lock, by means of a long 'umbilical chord'. Using your mobile phone, you can dial a phone number and receive a code that you type into the box to release the bike. You are then charged for the hire of the bike until you return it to any stand with a similar box. The scheme has been devised by a local inventor, and is known as Oybike. There are fears that the boxes, which are clamped to public bike stands, may prevent the stands being used by other cyclists. Supporters of the scheme point out that Hammersmith and Fulham has a higher percentage of bike stands than other boroughs.

Tram - Plans on internet

Outline plans for the tram route through the eastern part of Ealing borough can be seen on the internet thanks to Hammersmith and Fulham LCC. If you want to see how the Uxbridge Road might look when the tram arrives, go to http://www.hfcyclists.org.uk/tram.htm. These are basic cross-sections of the road layout reprinted from Transport for London documents in the public domain. They do not show where traffic may be diverted from the Uxbridge Road.

We want to hear your views on the tram. Contact David Lomas. e-mail: david_lomas28@hotmail.com
