Ken says yes to tram

Ken Livingstone has given the go-ahead to the introduction of trams in Ealing.
The Mayor announced his approval for the £200 million route between Uxbridge and Shepherd's Bush in a press release on 29 May. The aim of the scheme, which will run along the Uxbridge Road, is to encourage people out of their cars and onto public transport. However it has been met with some alarm by Ealing residents who fear that it will displace traffic onto residential roads. Ealing Cycling Campaign has also voiced its concern. The new trams will run along the same route as London Cycle Network route 39. There are fears the track will cause accidents from cyclists' wheels getting trapped in the rails. The new tram route is due for completion in 2009.
For previous reports see: Nov 2001; Oct 2001; Apr 2001.

Cycle money saved

Good news from Ealing Council Transport Department. Assistant Director, Alex Williams, has assured us that the £20,500 feared lost from the cycle budget has not been lost, and is in the process of being spent. Work on the cycle refuge in Leeland Terrace to enable cyclists to turn safely into Dean Gardens was completed in May; cycle parking at 5 sites —Churchfield Road (Acton Town Centre), Bond Street, Churchfield Parade (Mattock Lane), Boston Road (2 sites) — is going ahead; and the incorrectly positioned signs in Station Road and Church Road (Hanwell) are being replaced

Relief for Acton cyclists

More good news from Ealing council. Following complaints from frustrated cyclists and lobbying from Ealing Cycling Campaign, it has found money to fix the long-standing problem of motor vehicles parking on the cycle lanes in Church Road and Crown Street in Acton. In the past, traffic wardens have tried to protect the lanes from cars, but drivers see them coming and remove their vehicles before they can be ticketed. Cycling Officer Bob Davis is now commissioning the council's contractors, Parkman, to provide physical protection of the cycle lanes. We will keep you informed of progress.
