Survey
Results
Thank
you to everyone who took the time and the trouble to reply to the
questionnaire. The results are now in and make interesting reading.
We sent out just over 200 questionnaires and received 68 replies
(pretty good considering you had to find an envelope and pay for
the postage). Some views haven't changed since our last survey six
years
ago. Ealing Cyclists still put "More cycle lanes" at the
top of the priority list of campaign issues, and are still unsatisfied
with the quality of the ones that are there. However, the majority
of cyclists are now satisfied with the provision of cycle racks,
a dramatic change from six years ago when the majority were unsatisifed
or very unsatisfied. Clearly, the work the council has done installing
new Sheffield stands has been appreciated. You still want more racks,
though, with a third of people saying that more were needed at the
Ealing Broadway Centre. (Were you influenced by the publicity in
London Cyclist about the poor facilities there?) Once again, the
Uxbridge Road (London Cycling Network Route 39) is the top cycling
road in the borough with over 69 percent of cyclists using it, followed,
a long way behind, by Northfield Avenue with 13 percent. At the
suggestion of our cycling officer Bob Davis we included a question
on whether you preferred speed humps or speed cushions. (The borough
is extending the number of 20 mph zones, and these are meant to
be self enforcing.) There was no clear preference, though slightly
more people preferred speed cushions. However a significant number
of cyclists preferred neither. Further analysis revealed that this
last group travelled longer distances. There was no clear commuting
pattern. Two thirds of respondents use their bike to travel to work,
and it seems you commute to such far-flung places as Slough, Weybridge,
Kingston, Crystal Palace, and Chancery Lane.
The full results are available at Cycling
Survey 2002. Thanks to Robin for collecting and analysing the
data.

Funding
for Cycle Improvements
The 2002-3 grants
for funding cycle improvements across London have just been awarded
by Transport for London. The borough failed to get all the funding
they would have liked, however they did get a grant of £50,000 for
improvements to the Uxbridge Road. Funds for minor works on or close
to LCN routes have also been granted. They did better with cycle
training, winning a grant of £30,000 to continue on-road cycle training.
The take up of cycle training at the borough's schools is an area
of concern, with only 12 out of the 54 borough primary schools currently
running schemes. This money will go some way towards improving matters,
but in the long term, the council should not be depending on grants,
but should be putting more of its own money in as part of Road Safety
Training. As part of "Green Corridor" initiative, £80,000 has been
awarded to Park Royal Partnership for canal towpath improvements.

Broadway
Centre Cycle Racks
Within
days of being sent the article from this month's London Cyclist
highlighting the lack of parking for cyclists at Ealing Broadway
Centre, the centre's owners, Legal and General, have cut down a
row of bike stands to make way for new shop units. The stands, at
the Oak Road entrance near Starbucks, were among the most popular
in the borough and were nearly always full. Pippa Burchett of Legal
and General who is project managing the redevelopment of the centre
says they will be replaced by twice as many new stands. Unfortunately
these will be tucked away behind Starbucks where, despite being
covered by a CCTV camera, they will be perceived as being more prone
to theft and vandalism. We were consulted on this last summer, and
managed to get some improvements to their plans, but weren't able
to prevent this. At least the location of the new stands is closer
to the centre - the original proposal had them 75 yards away on
Windsor Road.

New
Cycle Lanes
A short stretch
of new cycle lane has gone in on Mattock Lane (hopefully the council
will resurface this road soon), and a mandatory cycle lane has appeared
in Victoria Road (though as yet without the double yellow lines
needed to enforce it.
